The crystal that derives its name from "pomegranate," there are many types of garnet, including almandine, andradite, grossularite, hessonite, melanite, pyrope, rhodolite, spessarite, and uvarovite. The color range is variable and includes shades of red, brown, black, orange, and green.
Garnet was used in the breastplate of the Jewish high priest. During the Middle Ages, warriors carried shields set with garnets to fill them with courage and protect them in battle.
